• 1966 - Began cleaning kitchen exhaust systems.
• 1971 - Started Commercial Vent Cleaning Co. Ltd. (Vancouver, B.C.) a commercial restaurant kitchen exhaust cleaning service. In 1992, organized Commercial Vent Cleaning into the largest franchise operation in western Canada.
• 1980 - Designed and installed a completely self-cleaning kitchen ventilation system
• 1988 - Appointed to the NFPA Technical Committee 96 Venting Systems for Commercial Cooking.
• Submitted a number of proposals that were accepted into the NFPA 96 Standard, 1991, 1994, 1998, 2001, 2004 editions.
• 1991- Designed and patented the only UL Listed access panel for commercial cooking exhaust ductwork, which meets and exceeds the NFPA Standard 96, SMC, UMC, and BOCA Codes (D.E.S.C.O.).
• 1994 - Appointed to the Fire Protection Task Force by the City of Vancouver, and Chair of the Sub-Committee on Commercial Kitchen Ventilation Technicians Certification Program.
• Attended Arson and Fire Investigation course sponsored by the International Association of Arson Investigators Inc.
• 1996 - Began writing technical manuals related to the industry (see below).
• 1997 - Created and patented a number of unique grease absorbent products to protect restaurant roof surfaces.
• 1998 - Engaged to assist the Power Washers of North America Association (Washington, DC) with the creation of a Certification Program for Kitchen Exhaust Cleaners.
• 1998 - Contracted by the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association Inc. (SMACNA) to write a comprehensive instruction manual on the Installation of Commercial Kitchen Exhaust and Make-up Air Systems.
• 2001 - In conjunction with Daryl Mirza, created the first feature length training video for the Fire Prevention industry.
• 2003 - Developed Phil Ackland's Cleaner Certification Protocol.
• 2003 - Established Phil Ackland's Exhaust Cleaner Training Center in Louisville, Kentucky in conjunction with DPW Services.
• 2003 - Development of Long Distance Education for Certification of Experienced Cleaning Companies and Crew Leaders in Exhaust Cleaning Field.

• Created and delivered a 21 hour credit course designed to certify kitchen exhaust maintenance workers for the City of Vancouver, BC's Fire Technicians Certification Program.
• Created and delivered a 14 hour credit Course on Commercial Kitchen Exhaust System Inspections, designed for Fire Prevention Officers, Building Inspectors and Restaurant Owners.
• Created and delivered a 14 hour course on Design and Installation Requirements for Commercial Kitchen Exhaust System for the University of British Columbia.
• Designed and presently teaches a regularly scheduled 5-day exhaust cleaning school.
• Designed and presently teaches a course for Fire Inspectors and Insurance Loss Control Agents.
• Designed and presently teaches a course for Fire Investigators, Insurance Companies, and Attorneys.

Since 1990 Phil Ackland has given numerous 1-3 hour lectures to various associations and interested parties.

The following are a number of courses that Phil Ackland has taught (and currently teaches):

Fire Investigation Course (on Phil Ackland's Inspector website): This course is for anyone involved fire investigation (investigators, attorneys, insurance agencies, etc). It provides extensive information on system compliance to the codes and common origins and causes of commercial kitchen fires. Additionally, it covers questions to ask of the people and companies of interest when a restaurant fire occurs. It includes an intensive picture and video presentation of real restaurant systems. The course generally runs for 1 day.

Inspection Course (on Phil Ackland's Inspector website): This course is tailored to Building and Fire Inspectors. It provides extensive information on how to determine if the exhaust system, associate equipment and appliances are in compliance with local jurisdictional building and fire codes. Additionally, it will cover the responsibilities of the installers, manufacturers and various service providers associated with the field. It generally includes on-site tours of active restaurant systems. The course generally runs from 1 to 2 days.

Cleaning Courses: A variety of subjects are covered focusing on improving the knowledge base of commercial kitchen exhaust cleaners. This course will include information on NFPA #96, IMC and other Code bodies. Additionally, how to set-up and clean exhaust systems, the various aspects of this field, and what and how to use the tools of the trade are covered. It also discusses sales and marketing concepts, to assist new operators to get into this business. Courses generally run from 2 to 5 days.
